Join the D-Star or DMR network with a radio, only with a USB Vocoder!

All digital modes in the ham radio require a voice codec (encoder / decoder, ie vocoder (voice codec)). The purpose of a codec is the transformation of the voice into a stream of digital data and vice versa, from digital information to the analogue voice. During this transformation a lot happens inside the codec of a simple analog / digital conversion. The goal is to reduce data speed as much as possible, as this will require less bandwidth in the limited radio spectrum. This is achieved by reducing and compressing the voice in various ways, on the analog and digital side. These procedures are quite elaborate and difficult to develop and therefore protected by patents. The developer then pours his ideas into the hardware chip and sells it to producers of radios and other devices.

Since digital amateur radio systems borrow technology from commercial systems, codec definitions have also been adopted. Although free open source codecs are available (free as in free speech), these free codecs are not compatible with commercial systems because they use other procedures. So we have to live on the radio with these existing commercial codecs. Each digital radio for D-Star, DMR, P25, C4FM, NXDN, etc. It contains a codec chip of this type, you can buy it with the radio. Now, if you want to participate with a current radio, you still need a codec chip to transform digital data. This is exactly what DVMEGA DV-30 does.

DVMEGA DVstick-30 contains a codec produced by the DVSI manufacturer, the AMBE-3000 ©. This is a state-of-the-art codec chip, which supports various coding systems. The result is that you can use the DVstick-30 with a software suitable with different systems like DMR or D-Star, in furious perhaps with other systems such as software developments.
A software suitable for use with DVstick-30 is Blue DV of PA7LIM. This software is available for many platforms such as Windows, MacOS and Linux and with suitable hardware (OTG compatible) even on Android and IOS. You need a headset or microphones and speakers for your computer, or use the built-in microphone / speaker of your notebook. PTT encoding is performed via a software button. Another software is OpenDV from DL5DI, but this requires more work like compiling the software yourself.

The advantage of such a "less radio" application in the stereo radio is the ability to stay in touch with friends at home when traveling without a radio, or there are no suitable digital repeaters nearby. The requirements for internal data rate are - thanks to the capable codec chip - remove low, usually an ISDN line with 64 kbps is absolutely sufficient.
